Word Frequency by Language

Look up how common a word is in a given language. See its frequency rank, usage tier, and percentile from corpus data.

How it works

This tool checks how common a word is by looking it up against corpus-based frequency lists for each supported language. The lists are derived from large text corpora (books, articles, subtitles) and rank words by how often they appear.

  • Frequency rank: the position of the word in the frequency list. Rank #1 is the most common word in the language (e.g., "the" in English, "de" in Spanish).
  • Usage tier: words are grouped into tiers based on rank — Core (top 100), Common (top 500), Intermediate (top 1,000), Advanced (top 2,500), or Rare (beyond top 2,500).
  • Percentile: shows what percentage of ranked words are less common. A 99th percentile word is more common than 99% of all words in the corpus.
  • Relative frequency bar: a visual indicator showing how the word's rank compares to the full list. Words closer to rank #1 fill more of the bar.
  • Corpus coverage: the embedded data covers the top 1,000 most frequent words per language. These typically account for 80–90% of everyday text.
